This time of year we are loaded with resolutions, do’s and don’ts and extremely high expectations (from others and ourselves). It’s overwhelming as f*ck, but I’m here to tell you it doesn’t need to be.

If you are here, chances are you want more time, location freedom, ability to work with people and brands you love, and like me you’re sick of pumping all of your time, and energy into building someone else’s dream. It’s been in the back of your mind, and 2024 is the year you want to make it happen.

The best time to start was yesterday, the next best time is now.

If you are completely new, here is a very simple 5-step checklist that will move you in the right direction and get the momentum going: Designers who are further down in your design business journey, I have something coming for you.

1. Figure out a business name 

   Keep it simple. If it’s hard to pronounce or spell do not bother. My advice, 2 syllables max.

2. Check if the domain and social media usernames are available GoDaddy is great.

3. Create social media accounts

   Again, simple is better. Don’t make it hard for people to find you.

4. Transfer your new domain to an email & website

   Invest the small amount of money to have a professional email. [email protected]. Emailing your first client from [email protected] is a clear sign you’re an amateur. Start off strong.

5. Add a profile image to your socials

   A picture of you, or perhaps you have already created a logo. I started with Cove in my favourite bold font and two colours. Simple. Remember this can easily be changed.

Starting a business has been the hardest and best thing I have ever done. The freedom to go where you want, when you want is something money will never buy. It’s not an easy road, (as much as the gram makes you think otherwise) but it’s worth it tenfold. It’s also a shortcut to learning a shit load about yourself you never knew!
